This app exists because of a large archive. Thirty years of family photos and videos accumulated past a hundred thousand files — far more than anyone could realistically sit down and look through. At that size a collection stops being something you browse and becomes something you need brought back to you.
Which is why the design starts somewhere unusual for photo software: there is no import step. You add top-level folders and the app reads them where they are. Nothing is catalogued into a database, nothing is copied into a library, and no file has to be enrolled before it can appear.
Keeping scans fast at scale
Three settings do most of the work here, and getting them right is the difference between a library that feels instant and one that feels heavy:
- Add top-level folders, not every nested album. One parent with subfolders enabled covers a whole decade; adding two hundred individual event folders as separate entries just gives the app more list to walk.
- Turn on Include subfolders so the hierarchy you already have does the organising, rather than flattening it into the settings list.
- Filter by file type. If you keep RAW files, exports and screenshots alongside finished photos, restricting the types you enable trims the working set before anything else has to think about it.
Random or sequential across the whole library
Both orders are supported, and at this scale the choice matters more than it does with a few hundred photos. Sequential gives you chronology — a folder walked in order, which suits a single event. Random is what makes a large archive worth having pointed at a screen, because it surfaces things you had genuinely forgotten rather than marching through what you already remember.
Random has one consequence worth planning for: a photo you miss may not come round again for a very long time. That is exactly why stepping back through history matters at this size — it is the only realistic way to catch something you glanced at half a second too late.
What happens to the files that do not work
Every archive of this size contains files that cannot be displayed. That is not a flaw in your collection; it is arithmetic. Across a hundred thousand files accumulated over decades, across format changes and drive migrations and cloud sync, some fraction will always be unreadable. The question is what the app does when it hits them.
- Corrupt files — a JPEG truncated by a failed copy years ago.
- Unsupported or filtered-out formats — including anything you disabled in the type filter yourself.
- Cloud-only placeholders — OneDrive or iCloud files that exist as stubs but were never downloaded to this machine.
- Paths outside your included subfolders — present on disk, but not in the set you pointed the app at.
All of these are skipped so playback continues rather than stalling on the first bad file. And when user media genuinely cannot be reached, the app shows built-in fallback images instead of stopping — a blank screen would look like a crash, which is the wrong thing to conclude from one unreadable folder.
Cloud-synced folders at scale
This is where the placeholder problem bites hardest. If a large part of your archive lives in a synced Drive, OneDrive or Dropbox folder set to save space, most of what is on disk may be stubs rather than files — and it will be skipped. Mark those folders always available offline so real files are present. The cloud backup FAQ covers this, and backing up an irreplaceable archive is worth doing regardless.
Finding one photo again afterwards
At a hundred thousand files, “which folder was that in?” is a real question rather than a rhetorical one. Optional filename overlays put the full path, the relative path, or just the file name on screen, so a photo that catches your eye can be located on disk a minute later instead of becoming something you half-remember seeing.
Structure still matters
The app does not reorganise your files, so how they are arranged is how they will be shown. That matters most for collage layouts, which place several photos side by side and therefore imply they belong together — the same-folder collage option plus themed subfolders is what keeps that implication true. If something looks wrong across a large library, open Settings → Log before assuming the worst — on Windows the file is at %TEMP%\MemoryScreenSaverPlus.log, and on Mac under ~/Library/Logs. Nothing is uploaded automatically; for a bug report, paste the last 30–50 lines into the contact form.
No index, no upload, no account
There is no background indexing service, no cloud analysis, and nothing sent anywhere. A hundred thousand personal photographs are exactly the kind of thing that should not be uploaded to anyone, including the author of this app — so they are not. After install it works entirely offline, apart from an optional check for new versions.
