It is a small, specific frustration that anyone with a large photo archive will recognise. A picture you have not seen in fifteen years appears on screen. You look up half a second too late, and it is already gone — and because a screensaver normally exits the moment you touch the keyboard, trying to get it back is what destroys any chance of getting it back.
Memory Screen Saver Plus treats the running screensaver as something you are allowed to browse. Moving the mouse reveals the cursor for navigation rather than ending the session, and you can step backward and forward through what has already been shown.
Browsing without exiting
Three ways to move through the rotation while it is running: the keyboard, the scroll wheel, and on-screen arrows. Use whichever is nearest — the point is that none of them ends the session.
The screensaver exits on exactly two actions: pressing Escape, or choosing Exit screensaver from the right-click menu. That narrowness is deliberate. Browsing is only useful if it is safe, and it is only safe if an accidental key press or a nudged mouse cannot throw you back to the desktop.
Random order is what makes this necessary
In sequential order, a photo you miss will come around again eventually. In random order across a library of a hundred thousand files, it may not resurface for weeks — and you will have no idea which folder it came from, because you did not get long enough to look. Stepping back is not a convenience there; it is the only realistic way to see that image again.
Every presentation frame keeps its own history
Live Presentation Mode can run up to six independent windows at once, each cycling through your media on its own schedule. Each of those frames also keeps its own separate playback history.
So stepping back to the previous image in one frame does not rewind any of the others. They carry on exactly as they were.
This sounds like a detail and is not. With a single shared history, going back in one window would yank all six backwards together, which would make running more than one frame pointless the moment you touched it. Independent history is what lets each window be its own viewing thread — you can chase one memory in a corner frame while the rest of the desk keeps moving.
Keyboard shortcuts
The full shortcut list lives on the About tab inside Settings, covering pausing, skipping and closing frames without reaching for the mouse. Worth reading once: the difference between knowing the pause key and not knowing it is the difference between holding a photo on screen and watching it slide away mid-sentence.
What this is actually for
- The "wait, go back" moment. Someone walks past, recognises a face, and asks what that was. You can answer instead of shrugging.
- Finding the original file. Step back to the image, then read its path from the filename overlay — now you know which folder to open.
- Holding a photo during a conversation. Pause on the picture people are actually talking about rather than letting the timer move it along.
- Showing someone something specific. Browse forward and back deliberately, rather than waiting for the rotation to happen to cooperate.
Pairs well with filename overlays
Stepping back tells you which photo it was; overlays tell you where it is. With overlays switched on, the full path, relative path, or file name sits on screen, so an image you rescued from the rotation can be found on disk a minute later. If the screensaver keeps exiting on you: that is the mouse-movement setting on a conventional screensaver, not this one. Here, only Escape and the context menu's Exit screensaver end a session — everything else is navigation.
Two modes, same behaviour
Navigation works whether the app is running as the idle screensaver or as a live presentation while you work. The difference is scope: the idle screensaver has one history for the session, while presentation frames each carry their own.
